Brother Future D2P3

I hope you all enjoyed watching "Brother Future" in class. We were cut short on time for discussing the movie after it was over so here is your chance for your voice to be heard around the world. Post what you thoughts about the movie. If you are having trouble use the question below for help getting started.

  • What did you think of the movie and why?
  • Did you like it? why?
  • What was the best part?
  • Why did we watch it in class?
  • Why do you think learning to read was punishable by death on the Plantation?
  • Ask your own question, or respond to some one else.
Make sure we stay on topic for this. I would like all of my students to leave at least one comment on this first blog entry for class.

I liked the movie cause it shows what the slaves went through.

What do you guys think was the most realistic thing we saw in the video?

I really liked watching brother future but I am just a little confused about how he got to slavery times in carolina by getting hit. (And if he ever really did.)

buy the way mr. roberts, I think they actually made the whipping realistic. The cuts people got from the whip were also pretty realistic.

I agree, Reading is good, but seeing how slave life was back in the day really helps understand it better.

I thought the movie showed exactly how slavery was terrible when TJ was whipped because of his urge to break slavery and i was appauld that his was whipped by a former black that i think he thought he was better than the other blacks.

I liked the movie because it was very informational and it showed the hardships that the African Americans went through during that time. It was very realistic in the fact that they actually show the way that the slaves were treated and what they had to do everyday, what they had to eat and the basics of their lives.Over all I really enjoyed the movie and I learned a lot about the slaves lives.

i like the movie because it shows that the blacks werent afraid to fight back and to take a stand for there rights to be free.

I think that the movie was very educational because it showed us what the slaves went through in that time with all of the wipping and the harsh punishments that they had to have put on them. Like when T.J. got wipped for taking a faulty pass and tried to use it to get to the tree so that he could get home back in Detroit.

I think the movie was great because it taught me how hard it was on black people. I'm glad that things are better than in the 1830's.

why did Zike whip the slaves even when he was a slave? How much money did it talk for slave to buy their freedom?

Anonymous said...

i dont know can slaves buy there freedom and can the owners cut there pay if they know there going to buy there freedom?

RE: Joe

IF he wa just dreaming the whole thing how could he feal the whips being hit against him

The most realistic part of the movie was probably when it showed how the slaves had to pick the cotton, its the fact how they only got a little amount of water during the day. Also an unrealistic part of the movie was when T.J. asked the African American if he could speak English...the African slave trade would have stopped by then so there would not be any pure African slaves in America. Only Americans were in slavery then.

I really liked the movie. It really showed how bad slaves were treated. I felt sad when TJ got whipped...I would have never been able to live through that.

The movie was different, I was a little confused when Jasiah got whipped because I thought TJ stole the book. If TJ did why did Jasiah get whipped? I also don't get how he went to Carolina by getting hit by a car, and if he really was in Carolina, how did he get back to Detroit by getting shot?

RE grant
Yes the slave trade may have been over by then but, there were always the occasional smugglers looking to make some money buy bringing in African slaves.

RE Melanie

The movie was really odd but good too. Josiah got whipped because he wrote his name on a slip of paper and he wanted to keep it so he slid it in the book then when tj put it in the denmark guys room he saw the piece of paper with josiahs name on it and then he knew it was josiah so thats why he got whipped, by the way the whip marks looked really real and yeah.

I liked the movie because it showed what slave life was really like and it showed the conditions that the slaves had to live in. it was a good movie to show during this unit.

I liked the movie because it show us the perspective of the slave in that time. It also shows how real it really was and that is wasnt just told be elders or teachers. the most realistic part in the movie was when the slaves got whiped. we all learned alot from the movie and slavery.

I liked the movie because it showed what the slaves went through but i don't get how he happend to wake up on a slave plantation.

Anonymous said...

I thought the movie was good. It showed me a lot about what the African Americans went threw. If I was a slave owner i would let all my slaves have there fredom.

Anonymous said...

I thought the movie was outstanding it showed almost everything the slaves went threw. If I was a slave I would try to run away to Canada. What would you do?

Anonymous said...

This as nothing to do with this unit but why is black history month (february) so short

Anonymous said...

re amanda
I agree with you it was a good movie to show although it was a little confusing at some times but it really taught me a lot. I never knew it was that bad and hard to live on a plantation.

I think the most important thing was to learn about the slave auction because it showed how they were treated unfairly and the movie was really realisitc. It was a good movie from the most i saw it gave a lot of examples from the time it was set in and in a way you felt like you were standing next to tj through the movie. RE: Cory, i agree with the discriminative and injustice to African Americans

RE:Travis

I agree with Travis. that Whipping the slaves was cruel and they should make less violent punishment like working on holidays.

Re: Brandon

The reason Zike whipped the slaves even though he was a slave was that he was promised freedom for doing whatever the master ordered Very UNTRIPPIN

Anonymous said...

i never really realized how hard that the slaves had it until i watched this movie. this movie had so much truth and explains that we may have some troubles but we really do have it easy! the whipping was really realistic and i though that the fact that one slave was whipping another slave was wrong because that slave that was whipping tj probably had experienced what he was putting tj through so i don't think thats fair.

Anonymous said...

I enjoyed the movie because it had so much truth to it and i really learned alot about what hardships there where.

RE Christine

I agree with you and Melanie that the movie was kind of odd. But sometimes that was what made the movie interesting in certain parts. Like when TJ used his weird slang words (that I hardly understood) while he was talking to Josiah and Caroline. I think that that was good though. It kept the movie fresh. (as TJ would say)

Anonymous said...

I never thought that, thats what slaves went threw when we learned about slavery. Seeing that movie really helped me get a better look cause now i respect the people that did something about it.

Anonymous said...

the movie was great i enjoyed it it would be better if the wasent so much punishment.

Anonymous said...

I agree with gede on what they went through and that TJ got whipped so I thought that was really realistic plus how they couldn't learn to read or write.

Anonymous said...

RE: Brandon I don't know ether. Maybe we could ask Mr. Robert about it?

Anonymous said...

i agree with number 101 that northerners and some southerners agreed that slavery was one of the main causes of the civel war and the main argument between the states.

Anonymous said...

i think that they were not aloud to read and write so they cant contact free people for help.
