Brother Future D2P6

I hope you all enjoyed watching "Brother Future" in class. We were cut short on time for discussing the movie after it was over so here is your chance for your voice to be heard around the world. Post what you thoughts about the movie. If you are having trouble use the question below for help getting started.

  • What did you think of the movie and why?
  • Did you like it? why?
  • What was the best part?
  • Why did we watch it in class?
  • Why do you think learning to read was punishable by death on the Plantation?
  • Ask your own question, or respond to some one else.
Make sure we stay on topic for this. I would like all of my students to leave at least one comment on this first blog entry for class.

I think the movie was good especially because it had a lot of examples of how life would be working on a plantation and it also incorporated modern day events. I think we watched it during class because we are in the slavery unit and we're talking about the civil right acts. We might have also watched it in class because it has good examples of stuff we talked about in class like when slaves start to rebel against there "owners."

Those slaves must have realy trusted there friends. If my friend came up to me and said they were from the future like T.J. did to Josiah, I would never belived her. That would be weird!

i think the movie was realy good and i think we watched in class mbecause it would teach us alot about the slaves and there rights and also since we are learning about it in class.

RE: Emilie 1
Your right I really wanted you to see some examples of slave life since that is what we are talking about.

What do you guys think was the most realistic thing we saw in the video?

I think that the movie was probably the best movie we have watched yet. I think that learning to read and write was punishable by death because if a slave learned to write, they could forge signatures, passes, and other things that could let them get out of the plantations. If they could read, they could write to other slaves about how or when a rebel would be and do it possibly without getting caught.

I think the most realistic thing we saw in the movie was how the slaves were treated like animals.

The movie was very realistic. I think it showed how life was for slaves very well. The movie was one of the less boring movie we have watched all year.

i thought it was an eye opener for some people to see how different and how much we take for granted. i think reading was punishable by death because the whites were afraid that the african americans would get ahead of the whites and would rebel because then they would be able to survive without them. i think there's too many movie's like this though. but it's always good to refresh your memory.

I think we watched it in class because we are learning about slavery and how slaves sang songs to keep their spirits up and the songs had messages in them that were shown in the movie. This movie was a good example of slavery and what we are learning.

The spiritals was a goog source to find out codes when their going to escape.I think the ovie was great and the movie showed me how hard it was back in slavery time!

i thought the movey was good becouse it showed the hardships of slaves.

i think the movie was good for the class because it alowed us to see how bad slavery could be. it also told why slaves were relly scard of trying to run a way . some times they would try to or die trying.

I thought the movie really showed me how lucky i am. My favorite part was when the one guy sang a rap song to his lover :) I think we watched this movie in class so we can relized that we are all lucky and have it quite easy. After seeing this every day problems don't seem as bad after all. I am so happy i did not live in that generation!

It would have been hard to be a slave for me at least because i always eat and when i do i eat a lot. The slaves only get a little amount of food which taste bad to. It would also be hard to work all day like they do. I bet those slaves were strong though. The only way i would stay there is if my family was with me or my friends. That would be the only way. How would you be able to stand it?

The movie did a good way to show how the slaved culture has changed from slavery times to now. It also showed how badly the slaves were treated compared to whites in general. I would rate this movie 4/5 because there a part I thought would be wrong. I think they would have made him change his shoes and remove his sunglasses because in that time he had no rights in law. Other then little things the movie was good

slaves should not be treated like dogs. Lets say one slave did extra and got on the good side of Mr. Cooper then he will treat them a little nice or give them a treat. Just like you give a dog a treat when he/she does something good. No one should be treated like that.

I think the movie was fun to watch in class, Because it was still part of learning of life was like then.. and it was like an interesting movie. My favorite part of the movie.. was when Josiah figured out how hard life was really back when slavery was a common thing.

I thought the movie was a good way to show and explain the hardships the colored skined had it when slavery was legal and used. The only thing about it was the part where you would hear about people being shot and killed. That part made me want to cry. Now that I know what my ancestors did, I feel ashamed because we abused the majority of the people in our country. What we took for granted back in the day has now come back to harm us. I just wish that I could go back in time and save all of the colored people who were forced into slavery.

i think that the movie was really great. it showed that back in the day, blacks were really treated poorly. i didn't really understand just how badly slaves really were treated. just think if you knew that you were a slave and then you got sold to a different plantation than your spouse or your kid which was literly all that you had left! that would tear me apart!

i think the movie was good but i felt bad for the boy that got wiped because of TJ wanting revenge

I liked the movie because it made slavery feel more real and was also sort of entertaining.

I think the movie was good because it shows how harsh slavery was and how much the slaves had to suffer from the racism. Im glad we have recognized the equality in all races.

I think that the movie explained really good on how it was for the slaves to live back then and how cruel the whites were to them. It makes you feel sorry for how your ancesters treated the blacks.

I think the biggest reason why we watched this movie in class was to show how bad the slaves really had it back then. Reading about slaves and how they were treated in text books doesnt give us the best idea of how it was back then. Actually seeing it in a movie really shows how bad they were punished, and treated. I really enjoyed this movie.

I liked the movie because it showed how mean they were to slaves and what they did for each other!I wish the ending was better though but over all i liked it!

i liked the movie a lot because it showed what the past was like and how the slaves got treated and how they ate i don't think it was fair to the slaves because if they tried to escape they got whipped im glad Martin Luther king Jr. came along and said that speech.

I think the movie was pretty good. It showed how slaves were treated and how actions can result into big problems.

I enjoyed the movie because it set a great example of what life would be like as a slave. I think we watched the movie so we would understand the hardships of a slave better than a book could.

We watched "brother Future" I think because we were talking and doing work on slavery and how most white men (masters) would treat them like nothing and would beat them if they did anything wrong. It also makes me feel like we have so much more and really opens your eyes. I like the movie because it teaches how it was and how it is so different today.

i think we watched this movie to see how slaves were treated instead of just reading about it.
i got a better picture of how hard their life was

Thinking about the movie again I can't belive how brave the slaves were. To have to go through wipping, harsh treatments, and name calling only because there skin color was diffrent. I think that is sad. When the slaves were going to rebel the must have been scared knowing that they might have been killed for there actions. the movie helped me see that better.

i also think that we watched the movie in class because it showed us the harsh reality on how the slaves were punished and treated.
i think that movies ties along great with what we are learning

I thought this movie was great to show in class. I liked how it started in Detroit and compared TJ's life. It also showed how slaves were never trusted and would be punished severely by their owners.

we watched this movie in class so we could learn how hard is was for slave in the older days. its to help us know better about slave. it helps us connect with older day slaves.

we watched this movie in class so we could know the way it was in older days.this movie help us fell the way slave would feel in the past.

I think this movie gives everybody a different perspective on the life of a slave...even thogh we were learning about it...it is different to actually SEE it in the movie. The slaves tried SO hard! Even knowing the risks they were taking by trying to read, or runaway, or even standing up and fighting for their rights. They knew what would happen, but they also knew what would happen if they didn't revolt!

I think the movie was good even though it is a bit aged. I can see why we still currently use it in class as an example. The movie was a good example because it gave you an inside look on slavery from a perspective of a slave. It showed how they had No rights and how unjust and cruel slavery was. Also they showed present day examples of current day including African Americans. I thought there examples of current day African Americans was a little stereotypical and could have been a little bit better. Also it could have showed life in the south currently to show a problem still exists.
